The Coffee Table Project

by Liz Dowling

This coffee table project has dragged on all summer.

It all started with the brilliant idea to stain our family room coffee table (above) black.

Here it is after three heavy coats of stain.  It took forever to dry because of the heat and humidity.

Finally back in the family room.  I thought I liked it….

Until it actually dried and looked like THIS.  Awful.  Into the garage.

I love this midcentury modern coffee table from West Elm – so I ordered it.

But it was too small.  The glass top is only 34″ and our old coffee table was 48″ – ugh.

I found a 48″ piece of glass from glasstopsdirect that was very reasonable and was delivered to our house in a few days.  Here is what the table looks like now.  Voila!  A much better scale on the base with the 48″ piece of glass.

Now I have this extra 34″ piece of glass sitting around, so I thought I would use this old barrel I got at a flea market and make it a side table.

Like the idea, but not with this beaten up gray color.

More spray paint!  I chose this teal because it matched the blue in this pillow.

First coat on.  Uh oh, this looks very bright.  I am hoping it dries a little less jarring.  It is a satin finish, so after three coats, it should be closer to the cap color.  SHOULD BE.

Teaser photo!  The color did fade into a nice teal blue/green.  I used clear bumpers on the top of the barrel so the glass would hold and not scratch.  You can see them in the photo above.

This little table sits nicely between a couch and a swivel chair.  It looks very green in these photos, but is closer to blue in person.  I can always repaint if it drives me crazy.

Two tables for the price of one is how I look at it – and a lot of windex!
