My “crack in the ceiling” project

by Liz Dowling

You know that hairline crack you find on the ceiling?  The one you ignore?

Getting bigger...

Getting bigger…

I ignored the crack in my kitchen for a long time.  Told myself it was faulty dry wall or a bad paint job.

But, this little guy was having none of my attitude and blew itself up the day before Easter.  Naturally.

Deck outside our master bathroom

Flat roof outside master bath

The culprit was the flat roof/deck/extra space (we didn’t know what to call it) off the master bathroom.  To quote the contractor, “a flat roof is NEVER a good thing.”  Great.

The whole roof had to be ripped off to find the leak, including some shingles on the house, the railings… Blah, blah, blah.

Nothing like the unexpected project…

Since we had to repair the leak, we decided to make this space a real deck that we would use.  Complete with a wood floor (removable if another leak presented itself) and furniture.

I had two old blue chairs and a rusted yellow table that I could use out there.  All three had to be repainted.

I wanted to match the color scheme of this vintage poster in our master bathroom, so I went with orange and white.

Voila!

Work in progress.

Nothing like a little spring snow to slow things down.

Almost finished.

P1090017
Done!  The railings and shingles still have to be painted, but the bulk of the work is complete.

Tim wanted two new lounge chairs for the deck, so I let him take care of that piece.  My little contribution was recycling our old metal chairs and table, that look really cute.  View through the bathroom doors above.

We have another white lounge chair (still in the box) and are “waiting” for the painters to come and finish the job.  Ha, ha.  But, we are very happy about our new space!  The chardonnay is chilling for our first evening cocktail “on the deck.”
